Numerous airlines travel to Rio de Janeiro (airport code GIG).  In particular, American Airlines, US Air, and Copa Airlines have various flights from outside Brazil, with Copa being the cheapest currently.  Within Brazil, TAM Linhas Aereas is offering flights for around U$300 between Sao Paulo and Rio (CGH ⇔ GIG and GRU ⇔ GIG).

Kayak seems to have the best suggestions for planning your trip, and Orbitz offered tickets via Copa that weren't being offered at some of the other ticket aggregators.

US citizens are required to obtain a visa to enter Brazil.  For the conference, all that is needed is a TOURIST VISA.  More information is available at the Brazilian Consulate.  Note that you must apply for a visa in person (or via proxy) and that consulates generally have limited morning hours for the required appointments.  Time is running short, so you should immediately complete the online application and schedule your visa appointment to ensure you will have your passport back in time to travel.  Also, if you are not able to go to the consulate yourself, it is possible to have a proxy person go on your behalf, and there are many professional service companies that will process your visa application on your behalf for a small fee on top of the standard visa fee.
